The President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has sent a congratulatory message to Mr Goodluck Jonathan on his election as president of Nigeria.
“Your victory in the first round of the elections was adequate manifestation of your personal popularity and the broad acceptance of your vision and your political programmes by Nigerians,” President Mills said in a letter to Mr Jonathan
.
What was particularly satisfying according to the letter was the general acknowledgement by all observers that the polls were conducted in a free, fair and orderly manner.
It said there was no doubt that that transparency would further strengthen ongoing efforts to promote democracy, good governance and the rule of law in the West Africa region in particular and the African continent as a whole.
The letter noted that over the years leaders in Ghana and Nigeria together with their brotherly people have worked to cultivate warm bilateral relations and it is “my fervent hope that your new mandate will lead to the further growth of the already cordial relations that exist between our two countries for the mutual benefit of our people.”
President Mills assured his Nigerian counterpart of his continued readiness to work with him to build their existing friendship not only in furtherance of their shared interests but also for peace, stability and prosperity for their people.
“Accept, your excellency and dear brother, my wishes for your personal well-being and the prosperity of the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter concluded.
