A 35 year old shoe dealer at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle has found himself on the wrong side of the law leading to the alleged chopping off of one of his ears by city guards off the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Mr Ebenezer Obeng claimed he was met by the AMA taskforce on Tuesday evening whilst he had displayed his wares by a fuel station, Allied filing station at Circle, Accra.
According to him, the AMA task force team accused him of flouting the AMA bye-law that prohibits selling on the pavements of the capital, an accusation which he denied.
Speaking on Peace FM, he claimed his goods were burnt right in his presence
after which the task force team manhandled and chopped off one his ear.
“Despite my explanations that I was selling in front of a shop and not on the pavement, they decided to send me over to their boss. Their boss ordered that my shoes be burnt which they did right in front of me. In the course of me being questioned, one of them gave me a dirty slap for lying.
“Whilst I was held down, one of the members of the AMA task force team stamped on my ears with his heavy boots, ripping off my right ear. They told me I can take it to wherever I want”.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Numo Blafo III has discounted the young man’s claims.
According to him, Ebenezer Obeng was injured as a result of his struggles between him and the guards.
“We have enacted the by-laws in the AMA prohibiting street hawking and selling on the pavement but these guys at Circle are being recalcitrant. Sometimes when our guys go there to ask them to leave those places they behave violently so in this process they were trying to take him to our office at Holy Garden.
“When they got to the gate, he was struggling with our personnel and in the process of struggling they hit his head to the gate and that is what caused him the injury”.
Numo Blafo III told Citi News that the personnel responsible will be investigated and dealt with should he be found culpable.
“We have got the personnel who were struggling with trader and we have asked them to come to the office for questioning so we can trace the victim and know our next line of action”.
